WINDRUSH COMPENSATION SCHEME COMMUNITY EVENTS
The Home Secretary recently launched a scheme to compensate long term residents who were unable to prove their right to live in the UK and suffered difficulties as a result.
On Thursday 6th June, the Home Office will be hosting a public event in Wood Green, to raise awareness of the scheme.
The event is one of a series being held at different locations across the UK and is open to everyone. It is aimed at affected individuals, community leaders, lawyers, charities and support groups, and will offer practical information on the Windrush Compensation Scheme in addition to help and support on how to make a claim.
Members of the Windrush Taskforce will be on hand to offer help and advice to affected individuals. The Windrush Taskforce was set up last year to help people who had faced difficulties get the correct documents to prove their right to live in the UK.
The Compensation Scheme will provide payments to eligible individuals who did not have the right documentation to prove their status in the UK and suffered adverse effects on their life as a result. These could range from a loss of employment or access to housing, education or NHS healthcare to emotional distress or a deterioration in mental and physical health. The Scheme is not limited to members of the Caribbean Commonwealth: anyone who was settled here before 1988 may be eligible for compensation.
People who were wrongfully detained or removed from the UK could also be eligible to claim. The Home Office will refund fees paid for certain immigration applications that were unsuccessful, and reimburse certain associated legal costs that were incurred.
The Home Office has a series of public events planned around the country in various locations across the UK, including Leicester, Bristol, Belfast, Bradford, Nottingham, Manchester and Glasgow. Events have already taken place in Southampton, Brixton, Greenwich, Swansea, Cardiff and Newport.
The Home Secretary appointed Martin Forde QC to oversee the design of the compensation scheme, providing independent scrutiny on the operation of the Scheme.
